Ceasefire, broken so soon – and how it is reported in the media

Damage caused by Grad missile in Netivot

Damage caused by Grad missile in Netivot

A truce was declared last night between Israel and the various terrorist factions in Gaza, yet as seen after every round of fighting, the terrorists broke the ceasefire very shortly after its announcement.

A Grad rocket (Grads are similar if not identical to Katyushas, much more deadly and with greater range than Kassams) exploded in the parking lot of a residential building in Netivot, injuring one man and putting another 11 into shock. The IAF returned fire after which the situation seems to have quietened down.

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip exploded in a parking lot in Netivot on Tuesday hours after the introduction of a truce between Israel and Palestinian terror groups. A man was lightly hurt by shrapnel and 20 people suffered from anxiety.

Most of them were taken to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. Rescue forces said it was a miracle there were no serious injuries. Damage was caused to several vehicles and an apartment building.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said Israeli aircraft attacked two terror hubs in north Gaza overnight Wednesday in retaliation for the rocket fire.

Since I complain so often about international media bias against Israel, especially when the chronology of events is reversed, I was upset to see our very own center-right media committing the same “sin”.

The Jerusalem Post’s headline reads “Despite cease-fire: IAF hits Gaza after rocket in Netivot“. Technically the headline is correct, but first impressions always count the most, and seeing the words “IAF hits Gaza” leaves the erroneous impression that they were the aggressors. It woudl not have harmed the JPost’s headline writers to state “Despite ceasefire, rocket launched at Netivot; IAF hits Gaza”.

Similarly I was disappointed to see the Times of Israel’s story headlined “Israeli air force hits two terror targets in Gaza” even though it had a sub-heading reading “Despite ceasefire, several rockets landed in Israel on Tuesday”.  Again, as with the JPost, the headline writers should have taken care to make the right impression with the first impression.

Davka Haaretz, the extremely leftist-oriented Israeli paper, had an accurate heading “Gaza militants fire rocket at Israeli town, despite truce“. Although I am not keen (to put it mildly) at the use of the word militant instead of “terrorist” the chronology expressed in the title is accurate.

Similarly, Ynet had a suitable headline with “Rocket hits Netivot parking lot; IDF strikes in Gaza“.

How can we expect the world media to correct its bias if we don’t pay attention to our own?

I just can’t help myself laughing at your biased reporting!! I am an EX Israeli supporter. I am also European .. I jumped with joy for every battle won by Israel in 1967 …to find out later how bloody ignorant I was..I was ignorant of the bastardry and murderous actions of The Urgun and Stern Gang the pioneers of terrorism of today upon which the fioundations of Apartheid Israel are formed in the Land of Palestine..and instead of living side by side with the people who inhabited the land for 2,000 years the Israelis chose to exterminate them like Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jews!! BOTH WRONG, there is no two ways about it. Today Israel is still the bully of the middle East with Hi Tech US and the most advanced weaponry against fire cracker like the inacurate Grad misiles which makes a hole in concrete the size of a football while Isreali bombs make a hole the size of a Football field!! Turns a six storey high building into match sticks.. and what about chemical weapons ..Phosphor bombs on civilians indiscriminatelY!!!! Talking about biased media ..never seen anymore biased media in my life ..even inface of the Internet age..still trying to lie to us ..how the perpetrator (Israel) is pictured as the victim. Israel keeps on up with its assasinations ..and pretend everything is sweet in the OCCUPIED l;and. The daysof occupation are long gone.. only Israel and the US occupy other lands ..not for long .. China is already sending the signal!! We won the War against Hitler and Germany is Free!! If anything Germany is the only country which should be still under control ..by the west and Russia..yet it is only under Israeli control ..because every German government still comes and begs forgiveness to Israel.. Yet Israel punishes the Plaestinians of all people..the people who allowed the Israelis back to a home they ran away from!!! What would you call Sabra and Shatilla ..a holiday in Hawaii?? what would you call killing 1,400 Gazans men women and children, and thousands maimed for life ..a mediteranean safari!! and a thousand killed in Lebanon ..

A partial fisking (too much BS for one post, and anyway, it’s my lunchtime):

“Apartheid Israel” — the only country in the ME that doesn’t discriminate against its minorities (or women or gays… )

“the Land of Palestine”–love those capital letters… it was never an independent state.

“the people who inhabited the land for 2,000 years”–no, the Arab inhabitants origniated from Arabia and came to the area (at the very earliest) during the Muslim conquest. To qualify for refugee status from the UN in 1949, Arabs only had to prove that they had lived in the area FOR TWO YEARS, so although there are undoubtedly many who had lived there for generations, there’s still a hell of a lot who had only been there for a few years.

“the Israelis chose to exterminate them”–yet, somehow, their numbers have grown since then by about 1,200%… Israel has to be the most inefficient exterminators in the history of extermination.

“Phosphor bombs on civilians indiscriminatelY!!!!”–nope, that’s what your buddies do (phosphorus was included in some of the latest rockets from Gaza). Israel uses phosphorus FLARES, just like other armies (including the Canadian and British armies).

“only Israel and the US occupy other lands” — hahahahahaha! I guess you’ve never heard of Cyprus, Tibet, Kashmir… etc. etc. etc.

“What would you call Sabra and Shatilla” — a massacre of Muslim Arabs committed by Christian Arabs seeking revenge.

I doubt that very much. Anyone who claims that is on a par with “some of my best friends are Jews”.

I am also European .. yet you’re posting from Australia.

I jumped with joy for every battle won by Israel in 1967 … yeah, right.

to find out later how bloody ignorant I was..I was ignorant of the bastardry and murderous actions of The Urgun and Stern Gang the pioneers of terrorism of today
Choke with laughter… How many people did the Irgun and stern gang manage to kill? How many civilians? Anywhere near the hundreds of thousands like your pals the Palestinians and the rest of the murderous Muslim Arabs? They also gave warning before setting off any explosions, unlike your murderous Pali pals.

upon which the fioundations of Apartheid Israel are formed in the Land of Palestine..and instead of living side by side with the people who inhabited the land for 2,000 years the Israelis chose to exterminate them like Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jews!!
You are vile and sickening. Read cba’s answer about apartheid, but of course you won’t because you are an ignoramus and a bigot. To compare Jews to the Nazis is the classic trope of the absolute antisemite.

Today Israel is still the bully of the middle East with Hi Tech US and the most advanced weaponry against fire cracker like the inacurate Grad misiles which makes a hole in concrete the size of a football while Isreali bombs make a hole the size of a Football field!!
Aww diddums! Didn’t enough Jews die for you to enable you to sympathise? If the Palis loved their own people as much as they hate Israel they would have taken precaustions for their citizens just like Israel does. Why haven’t they built shelters? Why do they hide amongst the civilian population? You are disgusting.

and what about chemical weapons ..Phosphor bombs on civilians indiscriminatelY!!!!
What chemical weapons? Israel has never used those – unlike the Syrians, the Iraqis, the Soviets… As for phosphorus, read cba’s answer – which I’m sure you won’t.

Talking about biased media ..never seen anymore biased media in my life ..even inface of the Internet age..still trying to lie to us ..how the perpetrator (Israel) is pictured as the victim.
No pretense needed when it’s the truth. Just face up to it.

Israel keeps on up with its assasinations ..and pretend everything is sweet in the OCCUPIED
You bet we’ll keep up with the assassinations. That’s what terrorists deserve. And occupation? Didn’t you notice that Israel stopped occupying Gaza way back in 2005? Not that it made the slightest difference to them. And to you obviously. Ignoramus.

The daysof occupation are long gone.. only Israel and the US occupy other lands ..not for long .. China is already sending the signal!!
What are you going on about? As cba says, look at all the occupations worldwide. I’ve never met such an ignorant idiot as you.

We won the War against Hitler and Germany is Free!! If anything Germany is the only country which should be still under control ..by the west and Russia..yet it is only under Israeli control ..because every German government still comes and begs forgiveness to Israel..
Ah yes, of course, Israel occupies Germany! Slaps head, how could I have forgotten?

Yet Israel punishes the Plaestinians of all people..the people who allowed the Israelis back to a home they ran away from!!!
I’m not sure why I keep on answering your idiocy. Only for passing traffic I suspect. Israel never ran away from their home. They were kicked out by the Romans and kept out by the Crusaders, the Seluecids, the Turks, the Ottomans, the British and the Arabs. And then they came back, and guess what – the Arabs wanted the Jews’ land of Israewl after all the centuries that they did nothing with it. What a funny coincidence!

What would you call Sabra and Shatilla ..a holiday in Hawaii??
A mass murder of Arabs by Arabs.

what would you call killing 1,400 Gazans men women and children, and thousands maimed for life ..a mediteranean safari!!
A self-defensive war against a terrorist entity hiding and sheltering amongst civilians. In any event, nowhere near that number were civilians. Not even half. The rest were terrorists.

and a thousand killed in Lebanon
      ditto.

Charles – you are a Nazi sympathiser and an Israel hater. You are not welcome here.

I’m becoming extremely disappointed in the Times of Israel, a site for which I had very high hopes when it started just a few weeks ago.

In addition to what you pointed out above, it was using AP copy on its Gaza stories for quite a while, and that referred to an attack several months ago in which “a 16-year old boy was seriously injured.”

That boy was Daniel Viflic, z”l. Despite the fact that I emailed them about it, there was no correction or update for the day or so later when the text was still there. Dafka the CBC website updated their text after I contacted them, adding “who later died of his injuries” (wording from memory).

In addition to the above, commenting is effectively only via FB identity, which I don’t want to use. And don’t get me started on the “Jon Stewart is nisht git fur de Yidden” articles written by humour-challenged people who apparently don’t understand that his is a COMEDY show, not current affairs.

    • anneinpt says:

I wrote to them to complain about the FB commenting and received a reply that they enable other systems too – but that is only on their blogs, and only yahoo, hotmail or aol. No Twitter and no other comment system like Disqus, Echo etc. Very poor technical sense.

And yes, I’m disappointed in the tone of many articles. We need another Arutz 7.

How odd that the typical “roles” of the newspapers were reversed.

OMG, I just read that post from “Charles”. OK, Annie, who first came to mind? I only got halfway through his comment before I decided not to waste any more of my precious time on it.

    • anneinpt says:

I’m not sure who he reminded me of florrie – just various other trolls over my internet lifetime. He left more comments than these but I deleted them. Who has the time, as you say. I only answered this one so that he himself should see a response to his lies, and for passing traffic.

    Hi Anne,

Centre right Israeli newspapers – JP at least – are maybe putting enphasis on IAF strong reaction just assuring readers on Israel willness of managing this situation under a strictly military point of view. Haaretz has never questioned this point since it is supposed to be strong fundamental in Likud and (centre) right wing credo – at least according to his readers ( me included )

Had the above not correct you could always say “tu quoque fili mi ” 🙂
No, honestly I can not believe JP is biasing Israel ( and Haaretz missing such a opportunity ! )

    • anneinpt says:

Hi Andrea, I rather think you have your papers mixed up. Haaretz is not at ALL aligned with Likud! It is probably closest to Meretz and the leftist fringe of Labour. Jerusalem Post was quite right-wing for a long time but has drifted to the center under new editors. I hope it doesn’t go further to the left because most of the rest of the Israeli press is leftist already and there is a shortage of right and center-right viewpoints.

I agree that the JP is not biased against Israel, but what worries me is that their headlines reflect a vaguely anti-Israel point of view. It’s probably sub-conscious but that is even scarier. It means they have internalized the anti-Israel bias that is constantly broadcast from the international media. If it was a genuine mistake then they have to take much more care in their headline writing as well as their general reporting.

  6. Andrea says:

I am sure my english was not clear at all ! .
Haaretz is clearly on the left and JP is closer to Likud-like positions; we could easily agree on this. The point I would have liked to pick up – but I missed it evidently – is that JP is putting enphasis on israel military response rather than reporting the chain of events. This could be apparently reflecting a vaguely anti -israel point of view but I would find difficult to share this analysis, considering JP usual positions. Additionally If this were true it would be difficult to explain the reason why Haaretz – a usual very critical newspaper of Israeli government – missed the opportunity to do the same . Indeed Haaretz reported the chain of events in a rather correct way. Does all this sound like a paradox ?
So I suspect the reason is more complex. JP made his headine without any critical intent but only with purpose of reassuring his centre right readers on effective results of military deterrence and Israeli govermnent constant pursuit of this way. This to prevent his readers from any kind of criticism toward a government which looks like not tough enough with Hamas according to criticism from the Right.
Haaretz has not this kind of concern for sure.

Although all above sounds complicate I admit.

    • anneinpt says:

Oh, I see! Now I understand. Yes, you might very well be right. But the JPost, knowing how the anti-Israel reporting is written, should then take more care with their headlines. This reversal of chronology is so insidious and it greatly influences the way Israel is viewed internationally.
