In a disgraceful but unsurprising move, South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) has voted to make BDS (Boycott, divestment and sanctions) part of its official policy towards Israel.
South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress, voted to make boycotts, divestment and sanctions of Israel part of its official policy.
In a resolution passed Thursday night, at the tail end of its conference this week, the ANC proclaimed it was “unapologetic in its view that the Palestinians are the victims and the oppressed in the conflict with Israel.” The conference called on “all South Africans to support the programs and campaigns of the Palestinian civil society which seek to put pressure on Israel to engage with the Palestinian people to reach a just solution.”
Israel will do just that as soon as the Palestinians agree to come to the negotiating table without preconditions. How many times does Bibi have to beg Abbas?
The ANC said it would set up a steering committee to implement the resolutions.
This marks the first time a resolution to boycott Israel has been brought up at an ANC conference. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of BDS South Africa, which pushed hard for the resolution, hailed the vote as a major victory.
“This reaffirmation by the ANC’s National Conference, its highest decision-making body, is by far the most authoritative endorsement of the boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel campaign,” he said. “The ANC has now taken its international conference resolutions and officially made it the policy of the ANC. We look forward to working with the ANC and specifically the conference steering committee to expedite its implementation.”
A statement earlier on in the article that I found bitterly amusing was this:
In a second resolution on protests in Israel focused on illegal African immigrants, the ANC said it “abhors the recent Israeli state-sponsored xenophobic attacks and deportation of Africans and requests that this matter should be escalated to the African Union.”
So let me see. It’s OK for South Africa to boycott Israel but it’s not OK for Israel to boycott illegal immigrants.
Israel is considered by the ANC to be an oppressive, if not apartheid state, and yet all those African refugees choose Israel, out of all the countries in the region, to try and enter and seek asylum.
No mention is made by the (un)esteemed South African parliamentarian of the reason for those poor refugees flooding into Israel. It couldn’t possibly be that they are being persecuted, not by whites, but by other blacks?
Surely not! Must be some mistake.
The Algemeiner adds:
Earlier this week, a group of South African Christian leaders joined the country’s chief rabbi, Warren Goldstein, in penning an open letter calling on the ANC to be fair in its decision. “South Africa has no just cause for choosing sides,” the letter read. “We should support both sides in their struggle for a peaceful solution.”
“When South Africa’s ruling party chooses sides in this bitter conflict, our country loses the credibility to be a voice for peace between the parties, and only the agenda of conflict is served. Such actions impede a peaceful solution that would enable Jews to live in their ancient Biblical land in peace side by side with their Muslim neighbors,” the leaders wrote.
Appealing to the BDS Brigade’s better conscience is a wasted effort. Asking that they enable Jews to live in their ancient Biblical land in peace is pointless since they don’t recognize the Jews’ right to live on any land anywhere in Israel.
Israel – the only Jewish state in the world. Boycotting the only Jewish state… sounds familiar doesn’t it. A nasty ring from the past and Dry Bones illustrated it so aptly.
