How the international media avoid facing reality when reporting on terrorism

Reading about the mental contortions that the foreign media have been going through in trying to ascertain the motivations of the Tsarnaev brothers, aka the Boston bombers has been an eye-opening education, if an entertaining one, for us Israelis.  While the motivations and ideology of the Tsarnaevs seem so glaringly obvious to us, we watch in astonishment as the liberal international press squirm in their intense efforts to remain politically correct and not mention the dreaded “I” word (and I don’t mean Israel).

Prof. Barry Rubin covered this issue here, here and here.

Tom Gross mentions the subject in his Mideast Dispatches: (h/t Chaim):

At the same time the International Herald Tribune today runs yet another long story about what possibly could have motivated the Boston bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (co-authored by 9 New York Times journalists) — again hardly mentioning Islam or the mosque he went to.

Mark Steyn also weighs in in his own acerbic way (h/t TCKT).

The politicization of mass murder found its perfect expression in one of those near parodic pieces to which the more tortured self-loathing dweebs of the fin de civilization west are prone. As the headline in Salon put it, “Let’s Hope The Boston Marathon Bomber Is A White American.” David Sirota is himself a white American, but he finds it less discomforting to his Princess Fluffy Bunny worldview to see his compatriots as knuckle-dragging nutjobs rather than confront all the apparent real-world contradictions of the diversity quilt. He had a lot of support for his general predisposition.

[…]

Twenty-four hours later, Sirota had a second feather in his cap. The two suspects in the Boston bombing turned out to be Caucasian males — that’s to say, males from the Caucasus, specifically the North Caucasus, Chechnya by way of Dagestan.

Unfortunately for his delicate sensitivities, the two Caucasians were also Muslims.

And now the incomparable Latma team (via Israellycool) have brought their own brilliant point of view to analyse the West’s dilemma.

Watch this video and laugh.  And try not to wince at how sadly true it really is.

by the time the main stream media wakes up from its fear induced coma it might just be too late to turn the clock back.

I think by now it’s become quite clear what the Boston bombers’ motivations were, and even the media are beginning to address it. What irks me so greatly is that it takes so long for the MSM to actually admit what is so obvious to the rest of us. They seem to feel they have to go through all these PC contortions until they can admit what is as clear as day.

As you say, it takes them so long to face reality that it’s almost too late.

Latma really hit the nail on the head!In Europe terrorists from Islamic states are “freedom fighters, oppressed & angry students,or whatever!” just NEVER mention the word Muslim & terror in the same breath. Its not politically correct!

    • anneinpt says:

Exactly. And not calling a spade a spade is the root of the problem of the West in dealing with Muslim terrorism. It’s like a kid closing his eyes and saying “you can’t see me!”.

  3. The difficulty of the MSM to use generic terms of “Islam” or “Muslim” in describing the identity or motive of terrorist perpetrators is their inability to figure out how to do so without condemning the rest of the religion’s followers. Unfortunately, MSM refuses to question the teaching and dictates of the Koran and/or its influence among Islamists. They did that with Communists, Nazis and the KKK. which were far less threatening, but did not identify themselves as religions and resulted in arresting those who advocated violence. The Koran advocates Jihad – violence, against its disbelievers. It preaches death for minor or even innocent blasphemy. What more is needed to outlaw Islam? Who wishes to sacrifice his life and that of his family for even suggesting the thought? Courageous journalism has now become an oxymoron

I don’t know why it’s so difficult. They have no problem talking about Jewish terrorists when an Israeli shoots a Palestinian or commits some other crime. No one thinks they are condemning all Jews by using the adjective. So why is the word “Muslim” so forbidden? Especially as Islam is the main motivating factor of Muslim terrorists.

I’m averse to outlawing Islam just as I’m averse to outlawing any other religion. But I have no problem in outlawing violence, in the name of religion or any other -ism.

      • Neither the Communists, nor the Nazis, the KKK or even the Jews ever threatened murder against their journalist critics. Moreover, anti-Semitism against Jews has always been a mark of social elitism amongst the “established” Europeans. Openly criticize Islam and you actively endanger your life and your loved ones. Finally, although there is no reasonable likelihood Islam will be outlawed requiring an outright religious war, It is imperative its teachings of violence, savagery, barbarism and intolerance become known to better confront the threat of the Koran and its followers.

        • anneinpt says:

Good points. I hadn’t taken the threat of violence into account. It is ridiculous really if one stops to think about it. You cannot call Islam violent or they threaten you with violence. Which kind of proves one’s point.

But as you say, the leftist elite are probably only too happy to comply with them because of ingrained, or perhaps even subconscious, antisemitism.

It is imperative its teachings of violence, savagery, barbarism and intolerance become known to better confront the threat of the Koran and its followers.
I fully agree, but here we come full circle. Who’s going to be brave enough to withstand the threats of violence from Muslims and their supporters in exposing this? Blogs like mine are all very well, but we are small potatoes with a very small coverage. There are bigger sites obviously like CAMERA, Honest Reporting and all the rest of the pro-Israel organizations, but we are preaching to the converted for the most part.

Besides which, I’m pretty sure most people with a brain in their heads know full well exactly how violent Islam and Muslim societies are. They just don’t like it when it is pointed out, especially when those doing the pointing out are Israelis or Jews.

          • Very briefly – What is needed is a “coalition of the willing…” There must be an existing organization that combines the voices of conservative journalists. If not, there should be one. Can we get their attention to consider a “movement” to alter the politically correct orientation of affected societies to recognize the threat of mainstream Islam without sacrificing their independence?

            • anneinpt says:

Well, it’s what we’re all trying to do with our various blogs, and as I said, there are several well-organized media monitoring sites like CAMERA, Honest Reporting etc.

Your idea takes it one step further, to change societies themselves, not just how they’re reported on, and that’s a whole huge new ball game. I wouldn’t know where to begin. Probably in school and even kindergarten. It might be too late for the adults already. One would have thought that 9/11 would have been enough to convince people, but apparently not.

              • Think … the MSM coalition is what was used to get us to where we are now. It’s just using the same concept and the medium to turn around the results. Actually, it’s really just a matter of waiting for the journalism pendulum to swing back to the “right” side.
