This afternoon 4 IDF soldiers were hurt, 2 seriously, in an explosion under their car near the Syrian border on the Golan. From the IDF Spokesman:
Four IDF soldiers were injured when an explosive device detonated under their patrol jeep near the Israel-Syria border Tuesday. Prior to the explosion, IDF forces identified suspicious movement on the border.
The IDF responded to the explosion with artillery fire directed at Syrian military targets. The IDF holds the Syrian military responsible for the explosion.
The wounded soldiers were evacuated to Rambam Hospital in Haifa. Israel has informed the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) of the severity of the incident.
The explosion was the latest in a series of similar events that have occurred on Israel’s northern border.
A concealed explosive device was activated against IDF soldiers patrolling the Israel-Lebanon border. No injuries were reported.
March 5Two Hezbollah-affiliated terrorists were identified attempting to plant an explosive device near the Israel-Syria border in the northern Golan Heights. IDF forces responded immediately and fired towards the suspects. Hits were identified.
What is even more worrying than just the explosion, which is bad enough in itself, is that the attack was part of an attempt to kidnap a soldier, according to Al-Arabiya, as Ynet reports:
While the IDF continues investigating the event in which an explosive device on the Israel-Syria border injured four soldiers, one of whom is in serious condition, Al-Arabiya reported that the goal of the operation was to kidnap an Israeli soldier.
There are also more details about the attack itself:
The device used Tuesday contained thousands of fragments and cells, and in order to rule out a kidnapping attempt, IDF cannons immediately fired heavily in order to mask the area. Within minutes, tanks shelled towards Syrian outposts, and Tamuz missiles hit more distant positions.
The army is investigating whether the explosive device was detonated by remote control and is expected to refine the operation procedures along the border fence, which has become a hot scene similar to Gaza. The IDF further noted the presence of many Syrian shepherds who approach the border fence and at times enter Israeli territory, and are escorted out by Israeli soldiers of fear they are collecting intelligence.
It is still unclear whether the attack was led by Hezbollah or carried out by jihad forces attempting to push the IDF to fight against the Syrian army, which is still controlling the northern Golan Heights border area.
Whoever is behind these attacks, regime forces, rebels, Jihadists of assorted stripes, what sort of crazy game do they think they are playing? The last thing anyone needs is for Israel to get dragged in to the Syrian civil war.
Meanwhile, please pray for תמיר משה בן חוה Tamir Moshe ben Chava and אלון בן אורלי הכהן Alon ben Orli who were the most seriously injured amongst the soldiers.
